The Film 'Together' Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.

We present a dare for long-term couples who enjoy the horror genre: Get comfortable with your significant other and view Together. This independent film success of 2025 just made its streaming debut via Hulu. On the surface, it might appear like conventional body horror, but inside Together lies a deep meditation about how we choose to love one another.

An Introductory Film Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together is the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have been together for over ten years. United in marriage in reality in 2017, the two stars contribute a particular energy to their characters, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The story commences when the couple relocate from the metropolis to the country for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical story element, admittedly, but that’s largely where the conventions cease. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.

A Paranormal Spark

While hiking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and the protagonists fall into an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a strange force takes hold of the couple. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding typical partnership.

The entire film is a slow burn of scares, interspersing moments of fever-dream horrors, gross (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes amidst something disturbing). Shanks skillfully blends these components seamlessly and delivers them in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.

Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and removed from his support system. He dreads the concept of completely losing his individual identity in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for transportation.

Shanks’ smartest move is that he refrains from painting Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

Both characters grapple with the type of challenges that come with any relationship after ten years. Deep down, they have affection for one another. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their future together.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the supernatural forces in Together represent these anxieties of codependency and giving oneself over to a partner, the symbolism does not come across as clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments provide a perfect parallel to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that single viewers have interpreted the film as a strong argument for staying single. Conversely, some couples who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own response could function as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you identify in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your partner and say, “We could get through that together”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can undertake today.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu now.
