Tetris Didn't Win at The Game Awards — A New Category May Address This Issue

Whenever a significant honors show nears, there’s always a demand for introducing fresh award types to honor unsung work and fill the spirits of fans with niche passions.

A fellow writer has already made supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. So would strategy board titles, representing a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist when I prioritize since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case supporting my request stands as crucial above others. This is the request: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and it will always spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that movie academies steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents an essential concession for the industry of gaming, which are so diverse they hardly constitute a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies currently feature award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these six categories successfully include a lot of ground, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, each quite distinct: building puzzles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Which classification works within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles launched regularly without proper recognition in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked completely that year
  • A different innovative game received no nominations in 2019
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment recently
  • Just some brain-teasers scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're small games, but the art in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games stand as most engaged experiences in the world maintaining this status for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges well-known building titles competing to become most purchased experience; it also contends for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, while interacting with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. It would be easy to populate a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators are working at the hard edge interactive creation, developing some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Just like movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait 35 years.
