The families of young people unaccounted for after a deadly blaze at a venue in a Swiss winter destination are confronting an agonising wait for confirmed information and appealing for information about their loved ones online.
The inferno engulfed the Le Constellation bar in Cans-Montana, located in the Alps of the Valais region, in the middle of the night of the first day of the year. Confirmed images depict the roof structure being engulfed in flames as beverages with fireworks are raised in celebration.
Emergency services have warned that it could take an extended period to identify the those who perished of the tragedy, which killed 40 people and wounded another scores more. Officials noted on the latest update that 113 of the those hurt have been identified, with the process still underway to locate the other six.
In the interim, loved ones have been posting on online platforms to plead for information about their friends who were in attendance that evening.
The whereabouts of teenager from Switzerland Arthur Brodard, a teenager, are not yet determined, according to an public plea from his mother.
The resident of a town near Lausanne, told a publication that she had gone back to Lausanne to check whether he was in the medical facility, while his other parent did the equivalent search in the capital, but did not locate him.
"I'm living a nightmare, an ordeal. The options are finding my son in the hospital mortuary, or I find him in a serious state. It's horrific," she stated.
She explained that some of his companions had been found with injuries covering nearly half their bodies. "There are no words; they went through a terrifying ordeal."
The Italy's government has said that six of its nationals have not been located.
One of those is Emanuele Galeppini, a 16-year-old promising athlete, originally from Italy but now residing in Dubai.
The national sporting body has stated that he is deceased, without mentioning the tragedy, honoring a "young athlete who represented passion and true sportsmanship."
His father, reportedly stated that his son was at the bar and was last heard from around the new year. An official spokesperson has indicated that a formal confirmation of his death is awaited.
Giovanni Tamburi, sixteen, is also among the missing. His mother said that he had been on vacation but had gone out with a group and ended up at the bar.
"Someone with him informed me they escaped after the fire erupted and that he had his phone with him, but then at a certain point he couldn't see him anymore," she said, adding he had been wearing a identifiable piece of jewelry.
One of his educators said, "I remember his good nature and smile, alongside great maturity. Every time offer to get me a coffee."
Alice Kallergis, who holds both Greek and Swiss citizenship but lives permanently in the country, was also at the bar on New Year's Eve, according to media.
Her sibling has posted an appeal online, saying the relatives has had "no updates" regarding the teenager or the three friends she was with, who are also reported missing.
Officials from her country of origin say they are closely watching the case.
