RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a joint strike targeting an underground arms cache in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The location, identified by intelligence, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was located in hills just above Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes employed Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a series of entry passages providing entry to the depot... early reports suggest the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the strike on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - referred to as ISIS - enforced extremist governance over significant areas in Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action demonstrates British leadership, and determination to operate in unison with allied nations, to stamp out any resurgence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey stated.

British military aircraft have conducted patrols over Syrian airspace to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of the group subsequent to its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank all the members of the UK armed forces who took part in this mission for their expertise and their bravery," he added. "They were among a great many UK service members deployed over the festive period. This action, to take out militants who endanger our safety, demonstrates how UK forces are always on standby, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure domestically and powerful internationally."

In December, the US military carried out what it termed a "massive strike" targeting Daesh sites in the country, following an ambush killed two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The UN says IS still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
