A substantial bluefin tuna created waves at the Toyosu fish market this Monday, achieving a unprecedented bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2 million; £2.4m) during the market's first auction of the new year.
The successful offer for the 243kg fish was placed by the parent firm of a well-known sushi restaurant group, which runs outlets throughout Japan and abroad.
"The first tuna signals a prosperous start," commented the entrepreneur, a familiar participant at the traditional first sale.
Dubbed the Tuna King, this entrepreneur is famous for placing high bids for premium bluefin tuna at these symbolic year-opening auctions.
After the auction, the winner told the press that he was "surprised at the amount," adding, "I expected we would be able to purchase it a little for less, but the price soared rapidly."
This new purchase exceeds his own record purchases:
Even after once remarking that he thought he "did too much," he has now gone on to break his personal record another time.
The first auction at the Toyosu fish market is notoriously known for exorbitant prices. In the prior year, the first tuna was acquired for 207 million yen by a separate food company, which indicated the fish would be available at its restaurants throughout the country.
The high-energy energy at the fish market during these pre-sunrise auctions has become a popular spectacle in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which started around 05:00 local time, was no different.
The extremely valuable tuna was quickly sliced up for patrons at the winner's sushi restaurants immediately after the auction was finished.
"I feel like I've begun the year in a good way after consuming something so auspicious as the year begins," shared one elated patron.
