Blast Costs 3 Police Officers Amid Eviction Procedure in Northern Italy

Three police officers perished and no fewer than 15 people got wounded in what appears to be intentional blast caused by gas at a country home in the northern part of Italy.

The blast was triggered as law enforcement and fire personnel approached the property close to the Verona region to enforce an removal notice for a brother and sister trio aged in their 50s and 60s.

All three victims who died served in the Carabinieri military police.

Investigation Developments

A man and a woman got detained at the scene and a third person who escaped after the incident was located not long after. All three have been transported to medical facility.

The explosion could be heard approximately 5 kilometers away and photographs from the location showed the structure left as a pile of rubble.

“We are in a period of mourning,” commented the Minister of the Interior Minister Piantedosi, who noted that attempts had been made to remove the three family members in the past.

Property Situation

The president of the Veneto region, President Zaia, said the residence was facing an eviction order due to debts incurred by the three owners.

Negotiators had been sent to talk with the family members who had locked themselves into the property. When the officers arrived soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities believe a family member triggered the detonation.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” provincial police commander Claudio Papagno told news outlets.

“A gas cylinder had been ignited, and the blast directly hit our members,” he added.

Molotov cocktails were also discovered at the residence, the Interior Minister stated.

Casualties and Damage

Injured individuals by the explosion comprised eleven more officers of the police force as well as three officers of national police and a firefighter.

Based on information from the Verona prosecutor, the property was in a derelict state and had was without power.

The prosecutor believed the blast had occurred on a floor above the doorway and stated to reporters it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Shortly before the blast, he revealed personnel had “detected a whistling noise, probably the gas canisters being activated”.

“We all knew the situation was dire,” nearby inhabitants stated to local news, adding that the three had in the past stated to “cause an explosion” rather than leave the house.

“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”
